GATHERING Beautiful Savior Kathryn Parker, June Packard
CALL TO WORSHIP
Good God, we gather here:
We gather as your people.
With open ears to hear your Word
and to hear the groaning of your world:
We gather as your people.
With open eyes to see your Presence
and to see the suffering of your children:
We gather as your people.
With open hearts to feel your Love
and to love the neighbor and the stranger:
We gather as your people.
With open doors to welcome all your children in
and to be sent out in your Name:
We gather as your people. Amen!
OPENING TO GOD 21st Century Africana
My soul smiles
My heart dances
My fears flee
My mind wrestles
My tongue shouts praise
My loneliness finds company
My spirit meets God
Surely, we are in the house of the Lord!
There’s plenty good room!
Plenty good room! Plenty good room in God’s House!

PSALTER Psalm 31:1-5, 9-10, 14-16 Louise Allen
In you, O Lord, I seek refuge;
do not let me ever be put to shame;
in your righteousness deliver me.
Incline your ear to me;
rescue me speedily.
Be a rock of refuge for me,
a strong fortress to save me.
You are indeed my rock and my fortress;
for your name’s sake lead me and guide me,
take me out of the net that is hidden for me,
for you are my refuge.
Into your hand I commit my spirit;
you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.
Be gracious to me, O Lord, for I am in distress;
my eye wastes away from grief,
my soul and body also.
For my life is spent with sorrow,
and my years with sighing;
my strength fails because of my misery,
and my bones waste away.
But I trust in you, O Lord;
I say, “You are my God.”
My times are in your hand;
deliver me from the hand of my enemies and persecutors.
Let your face shine upon your servant;
save me in your steadfast love.
GOSPEL John 14:1-9, 11
Do not let your hearts be troubled.
Trust in God, trust also in me.
In Abba’s house there are many dwelling places.
If it were not so, would I have told you
that I go to prepare a place for you?
And if I go and prepare a place for you,
I will come again and will take you to myself,
so that where I am, there you may be also.
And you know the way to the place where I am going.
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going.
How can we know the way?”
Jesus said to him,
I am the way, and the truth, and the life.
No one comes to Abba except through me.
If you know me, you will know Abba also.
From now on you do know God and have seen God.
Philip said to him, “Lord, show us God, and we will be satisfied.”
Jesus said to him,
Have I been with you all this time, Philip,
and you still do not know me?
Whoever has seen me has seen Abba.
Trust that I am in Abba and Abba is in me.

I want a god
as my accomplice . .
a god
who waits in line
at the entrance
of movie houses
and likes to drink
café au lait
a god
who spits
blood from
tuberculosis and
doesn’t even have
enough for bus fare
a god
knocked
unconscious
by the billy club
of a policeman
at a demonstration
a god
who hurts
to the last
bone and
bites the air
in pain
a jobless god
a striking god
a hungry god
a fugitive god
an exiled god
a god
who longs
from jail
for a change
in the order
of things
I want a
more christlike
god
