Quote for Reflection:
The best fisherman I know try not to make
the same mistakes over and over again;
instead they strive to make new and interesting mistakes
and to remember what they learned from themJohn Gierach, “Fly Fishing the High Country”

CALL TO WORSHIP Mennonite Church Canada
We are here today because the weeping Mary of Magdala once said:
“I have seen the Lord!”
We are here because Jesus still comes into our locked spaces and says:
“Peace be with you. Receive the Holy Spirit.”
We are here today like doubting Thomas who finally cried:
“My Lord and my God.”
We are here like Peter, tempted to forget the call of Jesus:
“I’m going fishing.”
We’re here this morning because of Jesus, who asks us face-to-face:
“Do you truly love me?”
We gather here to whisper timidly.
“Yes, Lord, you know that we love you.”
We are here as a congregation only
because many faithful disciples have listened to Jesus’ words:
“Do not be afraid. Do not be afraid!
Go and tell, ‘Jesus has been raised!”
PRAYER OF CONFESSION Cheryl Lowrie
We confess, God
that we look for the living among the dead:
that we wish things would return to just how they were
rather than looking for where love might be alive now.
We confess that we don’t have the faith to believe
that life might come into our darkest hells.
We confess that it’s too dangerous to believe it.
Give us the faith to leave the death we know
and to search out the places
in the world
where life might be found.
OPENING TO GOD Steve Garnaas-Holmes
The rumor of “No” is murmured all around you.
“No” shouted,
“No” intoned like a sacred chant.
All those noes like a whole language.
It’s to be expected.
They are not how you navigate.
All those noes are the darkness of the night sky.
Your Yes is a star against that velvet.
Shine, beloved.
Someone
making their way across a sea of noes
is looking up.

GOSPEL LESSON John 21:1-12
After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way. Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.
Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach; but the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to them, “Children, you have no fish, have you?” They answered him, “No.” He said to them, “Cast the net to the right side of the boat, and you will find some.” So they cast it, and now they were not able to haul it in because there were so many fish.
That disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on some clothes, for he was naked, and jumped into the sea. But the other disciples came in the boat, dragging the net full of fish, for they were not far from the land, only about a hundred yards off. When they had gone ashore, they saw a charcoal fire there, with fish on it, and bread.
Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.” So Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore, full of large fish, a hundred fifty-three of them; and though there were so many, the net was not torn. Jesus said to them, “Come and have breakfast.”

BENEDICTION by Cheryl Lawrie
Send us into the world, God
ready to encounter resurrection:
to point to love’s presence
to light another’s darkness
to speak your peace into the world’s pain.
and may we go as people who know
there is another end to the story
and who will not live with fear anymore.
