WELCOME TO CHRISTMAS 1                                                                               Kristine Ericksen

CALL TO WORSHIP                               Scottish Blessing

God, bless to me the new day,
Never vouchsafed to me before;
It is to bless Thine own presence
Thou hast given me this time, O God.

Bless Thou to me mine eye,
May mine eye bless all it sees;
I will bless my neighbour,
May my neighbour bless me.

God, give me a clean heart,
Let me not from sight of Thine eye;
Bless to me my children and my wife,
And bless to me my means and my cattle.

CAROL                                                      Joy to the World

OPENING TO GOD                                                                                                          Eve Thorsen

What we choose changes us.
Who we love transforms us.
How we create remakes us.
Where we live reshapes us.

So in all our choosing,
O God, make us wise;
in all our loving,
O Christ, make us bold;
in all our creating,
O Spirit, give us courage;

in all our living
may we become whole.               Jan Richardson

YOUNG PEOPLE’S MESSAGE                                                             Danielle Sturgeon & Family

HEBREW SCRIPTURE LESSON 1                                                                                       Isaiah 9
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness—
on them light has shined.
For a child has been born for us,
a son given to us;
authority rests upon his shoulders;
and he is named
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                                                            John 1:1-5
In the beginning was the λόγος (word)
And the word was with God,
And God was the word.
The word was in the beginning with God.
Through it everything came about
And without it not a thing came about.
What came to be in the word was life
And the life was the light of people
And the light in the darkness shines
And the darkness could not κατέλαβεν (apprehend) it.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK

We look for light but find darkness.
We look for brightness but walk in gloom.
We stumble at noon as in twilight.
You are the light of the world;
be light in our darkness O Christ.

If I say, “Let only darkness cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
even the darkness is not dark to you,
the night is bright as day, for darkness is as light with you.
You are the light of the world;
be light in our darkness O Christ

Blessed be your name, O God, forever.
You reveal deep and mysterious things;

You are light; in you is no darkness.
Our darkness is passing away; already true light is shining.
You are the light of the world;
be light in our darkness O Christ
