WELCOME FROM THE JOHNSEN FAMILY

CALL TO WORSHIP

Ancient One
who makes all things new,
may we receive with gentleness
and touch with hopefulness
and protect with fierceness
and love with tenderness;
and may we celebrate with gratefulness
and welcome with humbleness
and tend with gracefulness
all that you give into our care.

OPENING TO GOD                   Holy Spirit Mojo                            Cheryl Lawrie

Put down those things you carry; Sit with me a while
Stop making things so complicated; It is much simpler than that

Start from where you are, not where you would like to be
Not where others say you should be
There may come a time when
I will warm your heart towards new things
But right now I just want to warm your heart
All around you is beauty.  See it.
All around you are people I love
And I rejoice as you learn to love them too
Look for softness in your heart; There I am
Look for tenderness, and it will be my Spirit
Calling you to community

It is not for you to cut a way into the undergrowth
Or make a road into the rocky places
Rather let us just walk and see were this path will lead us
You and I

For my yoke rests easy
If you will wear it
And my burdens lie soft on the shoulders
If you will lift them

YOUNG PEOPLE’S MESSAGE                                                Danielle Sturgeon
TORAH                                                                                            Genesis 2:1-2

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished,
and all their multitude.
And on the seventh day
God finished the work that God had done,
and God rested on the seventh day
from all the work that God had done.

TORAH                                                                                          Exodus 20:8-11

Remember to keep holy the sabbath day.
Six days you may labor and do all your work,
but the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD, your God.
No work may be done then either by you,
or your son or daughter,
or your male or female slave, or your beast,
or by the alien who lives with you.
In six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth,
the sea and all that is in them;
but on the seventh day God rested.
That is why the LORD has blessed the sabbath day
and made it holy.

GOSPEL LESSON                                                                            Mark 2:23-28

One sabbath he was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?”
. . . Jesus aid to them, “The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK                                    Steve Garnaas-Holmes, mod.
Not a day of piety and churchy things.
A day of emptiness.
You, Lord, are doing the work. I am not.
Do I think I am more indispensable than You?
Help me let it go.
I have been freed from slavery,
so I needn’t act like a slave.
Help me honor my liberation, and take a day off.
Help me remember that Sabbath is an act of rebellion
against the pharaoh of forced labor that is in my head.

I empty myself, and wait.
Letting You and nothing else fill my time.
Letting time be a gift. Not an oppression.
Being unimportant, unproductive, irrelevant.
Being an empty canvas for You.
Time to sit and receive, and to wait.
Time to behold the holiness
of the Silence at the heart of all things.
