WELCOME
O Jesus, we come here today because we are hungry.
Give us this day our daily bread.
For you are the Bread of Life.
We are hungry for something more substantial
than a secular culture can give us.
Something broader, deeper, higher, more real.
Give us this day our daily bread.
For you are the Bread of Life.
Our world calls people consumers, but we are hungry for meaning.
Our world worships power, but we are hungry for intimacy.
Our world values stuff, but we are hungry for transcendence.
Give us this day our daily bread.
For you are the Bread of Life.
Our world is broken, we are hungry for wholeness.
Our world is sick, but we are hungry for healing.
Our world is stifled by hatred and fear, but we are hungry for love.
Give us this day our daily bread.
For you are the Bread of Life.
We are hungry, Jesus, for you.
OPENING TO GOD Manna Luci Shaw
They asked, and God brought quails,
and gave them food from heaven.
Psalm 105:40
I’m not asking for quails for dinner
and, if they flew in my window, at mealtime,
in a torrent of wind, I would think
aggravation, not miracle.
Time is so multiple and fluid. If I lose a day
flying the Pacific and gain it back
returning, perhaps the prayer I offered
this morning at first light
was known and answered last week.
You never know what a simple request
will get you. So, no plea for birds
from heaven. Rather, I will commit myself
to this quotidian wilderness, watching for what
the wind may bring me next—
perhaps a minor wafer tasting like honey
that I can pick up with my fingers
and lay on my tongue to ease, for this day,
my hunger to know.

HEBREW SCRIPTURES Exodus 16 selections
The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the fleshpots and ate our fill of bread; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.” Then the Lord said to Moses, “I am going to rain bread from heaven for you, and each day the people shall go out and gather enough for that day . . .
So Moses and Aaron said to all the Israelites, “In the evening you shall know that it was the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt, and in the morning you shall see the glory of the Lord, because he has heard your complaining against the Lord. For what are we, that you complain against us?”
The Lord spoke to Moses and said, “I have heard the complaining of the Israelites; say to them, ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall have your fill of bread; then you shall know that I am the Lord your God.’“
In the evening quails came up and covered the camp; and in the morning there was a layer of dew around the camp. When the layer of dew lifted, there on the surface of the wilderness was a fine flaky substance, as fine as frost on the ground.
When the Israelites saw it, they said to one another, “Man-hu?” (“What is it?”) For they did not know what it was. Moses said to them, “It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK
Equip us, God, for the work of ministry.
For the work of building unity of purpose and vision.
Equip us with saints who will say yes to your will and yes to your way.
Equip us, God, to journey with Jesus through life’s uncertain paths.
Equip us, God, with maturity that comes from knowing you.
Equip us, God, to speak the truth in love even when it’s uncomfortable.
Equip us to move beyond a childish faith that whines for more while giving less.
Equip us, O God, for the work of ministry that you have called us to do.
