Small Groups

Essex Center UMC is blessed with a passion for living out Jesus’ call to love God with all our heart and mind and soul and strength, and our neighbors as ourselves. Small Groups are a powerful way we do that. Small Groups create safe, intimate spiritual environments where folk can discover, deepen, and live out their most authentic selves. Here are some small group offerings at Essex Center UMC:

Odd Monday GroupBook Group

Odd Monday Group meets the 1st & 3rd Mondays of each month (hence the ‘odd’ name) at 6:45 pm in the parlor. We read books on diverse, even controversial, issues- but always in a safe atmosphere of loving faith and respect.

Monday Companions

Monday Companions meets the 2nd & 4th Mondays of the month at Eve Thorsen’s home. We’ve read spiritual biographies and faith-based fiction, and shared lots of prayer, tea, and desserts.

Thursday Bible Study

Thursday Bible Study meets every Thursday at 1:00 pm in the parlor to read the Scripture readings for the upcoming Sunday. We study, discuss, laugh, pray, ask questions, and learn more of who we are as children of God, friends in faith, and a community of love.

Thursday Companions

Thursday Companions meets on the 2nd & 4th Thursdays of the month at 6:30 pm in the parlor. Led by Bill Bowman, this group aims to deepen the spiritual formation of disciples through prayer, read- ing, and spiritual disciplines.
